How to block Instagram on your MacBook
To block Instagram on a MacBook, block the website instagram.com. Use Screen Time to restrict it in Safari, an App Limit if you want a daily allowance, or a scheduled blocker such as Cactus if you want it gone during work hours in every browser. The steps are the same on a MacBook Air, MacBook Pro, iMac, or Mac mini. What changes them is the macOS version.
- Block Instagram in Safari all the time: add it to Screen Time's Restricted list.
- Allow a fixed amount each day: set a Screen Time limit.
- Block Instagram during recurring hours in every browser: use a scheduled blocker.
Whichever you pick, block both instagram.com and www.instagram.com, then test in each browser you use.
Is there an Instagram app for Mac?
No. As of October 2026, Meta does not make a Mac version of Instagram. It released an Instagram app for iPad in September 2025, but the App Store listing lists iPhone and iPad only, not Mac. On a Mac you use Instagram at www.instagram.com in a browser.
Some third-party "Instagram for Mac" apps show the website inside their own window. They still connect to Instagram's hostnames, so a Mac-level block can affect them, while a Safari-only restriction does not. Test the app you actually use.
The Instagram hostnames that matter
Instagram's web app lives at www.instagram.com. Here is what each related hostname does, checked in October 2026.
| Hostname | What it does | Add it? |
|---|---|---|
instagram.com | Redirects to www.instagram.com | Yes |
www.instagram.com | The web app, messages, and the embed code other sites use | Yes |
m.instagram.com, l.instagram.com, instagr.am | Mobile, link, and short addresses that redirect to www.instagram.com | Optional |
static.cdninstagram.com and scontent-…cdninstagram.com | Code, photos, and videos for the web app | Usually no |
threads.com | Threads, a separate Meta site | Only if you want Threads blocked too |
The redirecting addresses end at www.instagram.com, so once that is blocked they fail anyway. Add them only if you want them to fail directly.
The content delivery (CDN) hostnames are where people overdo it. They serve the photos and scripts, but they are useless without the page at www.instagram.com, so blocking them adds nothing. Photo hosts also come in many region-specific names, and there is no single name that covers them. The bare cdninstagram.com did not resolve at all in October 2026, so adding it does nothing. Blocking the CDN hosts you can find may break Instagram images embedded in other pages, and it is hard to predict what else shares them. Block the two main names and test.
Embedded Instagram posts on news sites and blogs load from www.instagram.com. During a block, expect those embeds to show up blank.
Method 1: Block Instagram with Screen Time in Safari
Screen Time is free and built into macOS. Apple keeps the website list in Content & Privacy, not in Safari's settings.
- Open System Settings and click Screen Time in the sidebar. Turn it on if macOS asks.
- Click Content & Privacy and turn it on.
- Click App Store, Media, Web, & Games.
- Next to Safari, choose Limit Adult Websites, then click Customize.
- Click the add button below the Restricted list, enter
instagram.com, and click Done. Addwww.instagram.comthe same way if it still loads. - Open
www.instagram.comin Safari and confirm it no longer loads.
On macOS 14 Sonoma, that pane is called Store, Web, Siri & Game Center Content, and the menu is Web Content instead of Safari. On macOS 27 Golden Gate, Apple's overview page labels the button Content & Privacy Restrictions, but the Safari list is still under App Store, Media, Web, & Games. Apple describes the options in its guide to App Store, Media, Web, & Games settings.
This works best when someone else holds the Screen Time passcode. If you set it yourself, the block is a few clicks from gone.
Method 2: Set a daily Instagram limit
A limit lets Instagram work until you have used up your time, then blocks it for the rest of the day. On macOS Sonoma 14 through Tahoe 26:
- Open System Settings > Screen Time > App Limits and turn it on.
- Click Add Limit.
- Expand Websites at the bottom of the list. Select
instagram.comif you have visited it, or add the URL. - Choose Every Day and enter an amount, or Custom for different amounts per day.
- Select Block at end of limit, then click Done.
These steps follow Apple's App Limits guide for macOS Tahoe 26. macOS 27 replaced App Limits with Schedules and Time Allowances. Apple's guide describes Time Allowances by category, such as Social Media. As of October 2026 it does not describe a limit for a single website, so check what your Mac offers.
A limit decides how much, not when. Your 20 minutes can be spent at 9:05 on a Monday.
Method 3: Block Instagram during work hours with Cactus
A scheduled blocker fits a rule like "no Instagram on weekdays from 9:00 to 17:30." Cactus for Mac runs one recurring schedule: one time range, the weekdays it repeats, and one list of sites. It blocks those sites at the Mac level through /etc/hosts and the pf firewall, so the block applies in Safari, Chrome, Arc, Firefox, and other browsers without an extension.
- Install Cactus, move it to Applications, and allow it to run in the background when System Settings asks.
- Pick the days and drag the time block for the hours Instagram should be unavailable.
- Add
instagram.com. Cactus blocksinstagram.comandwww.instagram.comtogether. - Add
threads.comor any other hostname from the table if you want it covered. Cactus blocks only the names you add plus theirwww.version. - Click Turn On Cactus and test in each browser.
Once a block starts, Cactus has no button to end it early. Edits made during a block apply from the next one. A Mac administrator can still remove Cactus, so it is a commitment aid, not parental control. How Cactus blocks websites explains the details.
Know the limits before you buy:
- Cactus blocks whole sites.
instagram.com/reelsblocks all of Instagram, including messages. - It has one schedule and one site list. The longest block is 23 hours 45 minutes, so for a permanent block use Screen Time.
- It works only on the Mac. There is no iPhone version, and it does not block apps.
Cactus costs $19.99 once and runs on macOS 14 or later. The 7-day trial starts when you turn on your first schedule, with no account or card. If you also need Instagram blocked on your phone, a cross-device tool such as Freedom is the better choice.
Block Instagram on Safari and Chrome on Mac
Safari. Screen Time's Restricted list is the built-in route, and Apple documents it as a Safari setting. Method 1 covers the steps.
Chrome. Test Chrome separately, because Apple documents that list for Safari. Your options in Chrome are a blocking extension, which covers only Chrome and can be switched off in a few clicks, or a blocker that works below the browser. Chrome's Use secure DNS setting can bypass the Mac's hosts file, which affects hosts-based blockers. How to block websites on Mac Chrome walks through each option.
Every browser at once. If you switch browsers when one is blocked, a Mac-level block is the one that holds. Test Arc, Firefox, and Brave as well as Safari and Chrome.
Which method should you use?
Use Screen Time if you only use Safari and want Instagram gone for good, ideally with someone else holding the passcode. Use a daily limit if the amount of time is the problem. Use Cactus when the problem is specific hours, such as your workday, and you want the block to start without a daily decision in every browser.
If Instagram is one of several feeds you reach for, the guide to blocking social media on Mac covers the full list. Facebook needs its own hostnames, covered in how to block Facebook on Mac.
Common Instagram blocking problems
Instagram is blocked in Safari but opens in Chrome
Screen Time's list is documented for Safari. Use a blocker that works at the Mac level, or add an extension to Chrome. If you use a hosts-based method, check whether Chrome's secure DNS is on. More causes are in why Screen Time is not blocking websites.
Photos load but the page does not
You may see Instagram images on other sites or in search results. Those come from CDN hostnames. Leave them alone unless they are the problem, because the photos alone do not give you the feed.
Threads still works
Threads is a separate site at threads.com. Add it if you want it blocked during the same hours.
You only want to block Reels
Neither Cactus nor the hosts file can block one section of a site. A URL-based browser extension can, inside one browser. Otherwise block all of Instagram during work hours and use it outside them.
Instagram still loads after you set up a block
Reload the tab, since a page can come from the browser's cache. Browsers with their own secure DNS, iCloud Private Relay in Safari, proxies, and some VPNs can affect blocking, so test with the setup you use every day.
Test the result before you rely on it
Open instagram.com, www.instagram.com, and a link someone sent you. Try every browser you use, including a private window. For a schedule, open Instagram just after the start time and check that it returns at the end time. A block is useful only when it behaves the way you meant it to.
